Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation is an FDA cleared alternative treatment for the treatment of Medication-refractory depression.

The principle of therapeutic magnetic stimulation is based on the following: The magnetic stimulator uses magnetic pulses of short duration. The emerging high-intensity electromagnetic field easily penetrates through skin, cranium bones and soft tissues. As a result, an electrical current is induced within the cortex. This electrical current can modulate activity and excitability of the cortex neurons for a period of time exceeding the stimulation session time. This modulation has a clinically proven therapeutic effect that has been FDA cleared for the treatment of depression.

CLINICALLY PROVEN Clinical studies have clearly demonstrated that TMS Therapy can help achieve remission for patients living with severe depression. For many patients, depression symptoms significantly improved or went away after 4 to 6 weeks of treatment with TMS Therapy. TMS was included in the 2010 American Psychiatric Association (APA) Practice Guideline for the Treatment of Patients with Major Depression—guidelines that provide recommendations for how psychiatrists treat depression. In an NIMH-funded, independent, randomized controlled trial, patients treated with TMS, were four times more likely to achieve remission compared to patients receiving sham treatment (P = 0.0173; odds ratio = 4.05).

FACTS ABOUT TMS

The science behind TMS therapy is evolving as researchers and physicians are successfully treating patients world-wide for such diverse mental ailments such as Autism, Addiction, Anxiety, ADHD, Migraines, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Bipolar disorder, Fibromyalgia, and PTSD. Our TMS team headed by our Medical Director will be happy to discuss the science behind these treatments and whether such treatment might be good for you. Because these TMS applications are not yet FDA cleared they are offered as “off label” TMS or TBS.
You are seated in a comfortable chair with the option to watch your favorite tv show or video on a screen or your device using earplugs .Once comfortable, the physician or his TMS certified assistant will place the TMS coil over your head to ensure maximum and effective transcranial magnetic stimulation of the targeted brain region. Once the session begins, there will be a ‘tapping sound emitted from the coil in varying intervals, depending on treatment protocol. Treatment time varies, Deep TMS therapy will last about 36 minutes and Theta Burst Therapy will last about six minutes. Once treatment is completed, you can immediately return to normal daily routine, and you can drive yourself home or to work thereafter.
The treatment is without the side effects typically experienced with anti-depressants. Some patients report of a mild discomfort or headache, but you should be able to resume your daily activities right after treatment. TMS is non-invasive, non-systemic, and has not been shown to cause any systemic side effects. Our TMS treatments are administered at our offices and do not require hospitalization or anesthesia.
While many patients experience remission, most patients continue taking antidepressants after successful TMS therapy, usually decreasing intake, depending on person.
In reality, TMS therapy is not like Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT). ECT is a treatment based on using electricity to induce seizures. On the other hand, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation uses magnetic pulses to non-invasively stimulate specific brain regions associated with major depressive disorder. ECT requires anesthesia and has serious side effects, including memory loss. TMS therapy is performed in our offices, requires no anesthesia, and has no systemic side effects.
